Next week (November 14-17, 2011) Finisar will hightailing it to the Pacific Northwest for some HPC action at this year’s SuperComputing 2011 conference in Seattle, Washington. Now in its 24th year, SC11 is all about “Connecting Communities through HPC”. In order to build a larger, more diverse, knowledgeable and skilled community, this year’s conference is focusing on innovating HPC applications and advancing scientific discovery for the local, regional, national and global society.
While there will be much to do at SC11, we hope you’ll take some time to stop by the Finisar Exhibit Booth (#2634) where a few of our High-Speed Optics experts will be available to discuss company updates, in addition to trends in High Performance Computing (HPC) and Datacenters. During the exhibition, we especially look forward to sharing with you some demos and the latest technology developments in our active optical cable line.
Another booth to check out is the joint-hosted InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA) and OpenFabrics Alliance (OFA) (booth #6010) where you’ll find a presentation taking place from our very own Steffen Koehler around “Active Optical Cables and Transceivers of InfiniBand QDR and FDR”.

As a member of the InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA), Finisar is participating in the IBTA/ OpenFabrics Alliance (OFA) booth at Supercomputing 2011 taking place in Seattle, Washington November 12-18.

The week before last (June 6-8, 2011) we were at Sensors Expo – the North American conference focused on Sensors and Sensor Integrated Systems – located at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois. Just like last year, the show took place alongside ESC Chicago (focused on Embedded Systems) and attendees had the option to check out each shows Expo floor.
At this year’s Sensors Expo, Finisar showcased our Active Components product line – including our industry leading high volume VCSEL technology. Finisar VCSEL’s superior reliability even in non-hermetic environments, low drive current, high coupled power, narrow and circularly symmetric beam and versatile packaging options are enabling solutions not possible with other optical technologies.
Finisar showcased the versatility of the VCSELs via several demos – One focused on velocity and particle size detection based on VCSEL being a coherent source of light. Another demo showed the superior performance of the VCSEL in edge detection over an LED due to its narrow beam divergence. The final demonstration highlighted the advantages of how VCSELs significantly reduced power consumption versus an LED (by virtue of higher power at similar drive currents).
We’re proud to share that there are over 100M VCSELs currently in the field and a wide variety of available VCSELs (single mode, multi-mode, high power (>200mW), high efficiency, multiple wavelengths) that can be used to develop many different sensors!
In case you haven’t heard the news…Finisar was ranked the 3rd most innovative technology company in America in a post featured on the Forbes blog that was written by contributor Haydn Shaughnessy. The top five technology companies he listed have been identified as those that scored highest on an objective basis – based on online references – as an innovator and/or prized for its new products. In the article, Haydn (who is currently the senior editor at Innovation Management) had the following to say about Finisar:
“…There’s a deeper vein of innovation running through the companies that supply the infrastructure to the new economy. They’re not so well known but they deserve recognition…[Finisar] maker of optics subsystems for LAN, WAN, MANs is consistently referenced as an innovator.”
We are honored to have had our efforts recognized by Haydn and featured on the Forbes blog. As Haydn explains in the article, he gave these ranking to companies who are consistently referenced online as being innovative, creative or best in class. At Finisar, we are constantly trying to push the envelope and offer our customers the best products possible. Next week (November 15-18, 2010) Finisar will be attending SuperComputing 2010 in the birthplace of Jazz – the lively New Orleans, Louisiana. Now in its 23rd year – this year marks the first time it will be held in New Orleans – SC10 is the premier conference and exhibition for high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis.
