In what businesses does Finisar compete?

Finisar is one of the premier suppliers of pluggable optical transceivers in the world having first targeted the development of 1 Gb/s transceivers for storage applications in the mid-90’s. While storage customers comprised the vast majority of revenue at the time of our public offering in 1999, the Company has considerably broadened its optical product portfolio over time to include products that operate with other protocols and at data transfer rates of up to 40Gb/s. The Company generally breaks down its revenue each quarter by product application including LAN/SAN applications involving distances of generally less than 500 meters, Metro applications involving longer distance applications for Ethernet and storage protocols and Telecom applications involving similar distances but which are compliant with the SONET protocol typically used in legacy carrier networks. The Company also designs and manufactures testing and monitoring equipment for various storage protocols used by OEMs in designing and testing their networking equipment and by end users for monitoring their data centers.

Who are some of the competitors in these businesses?

In optics, Finisar competes primarily with Avago, JDSU, Intel, Optium, Opnext, and Sumitomo.

How does Finisar seek to differentiate itself with these competitors?

Finisar is one of the few companies who assembles and tests its optical products primarily in its own internal production facilities as opposed to using subcontract manufacturers. The Company is also highly vertically integrated supplying all of its needs for VCSEL lasers used for short-haul LAN and SAN applications and a portion of the longer distance lasers used for Metro and Telecom applications. We also design most of our own ICs and have them fabricated outside in order to be able to innovate more quickly than if we depended on commercial suppliers of these chips.

Are their portions of the optics market in which Finisar does not offer products?

Finisar does not offer products used for very long distance applications involving hundreds or thousands of kilometers such as optical amplifiers. It does not offer products for fiber-to-the-home applications for passive optical networks although it has recently offered a GPON transceiver for customer evaluation.
